A New Community Use for an Old Community Building

We appointed Ralph Carpenter as the architect to design the regeneration scheme for the old hospital site. Ralph is an award winning ‘deep green’ architect and a Trustee of The Suffolk Preservation Society. His plans, which restore the front and east elevations of Thomas Keye’s 1903 building, create a contemporary design that is sympathetic to the character of the old hospital, the Conservation Area, and the beautiful 14C Grade 1 listed Church of St. Edmund. Ralph will be using building techniques that ensure that both embodied energy and use energy are close to zero carbon.

The scheme is for 5 affordable 2-bedroom flats, a business hub, and a community hub that will include a new home for the Southwold public library, a crèche and a farm to fork café. There are also four market houses – one is a fully disability compliant bungalow. All of the market houses have been designed as principal residences, attractive to older people looking to downsize.

The plans were first put on display at the Southwold Library and the Town Hall in May 2017. If you did not have a chance to see them, you can find them below.
