A Letter to the Editor

A Letter to the Editor of the Southwold Journal, dated 6 February 2016, from Dr Andrew Eastaugh MA, MBBS, FRCP, FRCGP:

Dear Sir,

Southwold Town Council is to be congratulated on the decision for Southwold Hospital to be designated as an asset for community use.

This is a chance to maintain and extend the 120-year history of a building dedicated to the service of the community, supported by the community.  In 2003 we celebrated the 100yr history of the hospital and were reminded how it had been founded by the leadership and foresight of the then vicar supported by the mayor and council.  How the people of Southwold raised the money to buy the Fieldstile road site, erect the building and pay for the nurses. Though out its history the people of Southwold and District have contributed through fund raising and legacies to further its work.  It has always been an integral part of the community.

Health needs change and the community’s needs change.  The current building and site is no longer suitable for the health and care needs, but it can still be an integral part of our community providing work or recreational space, a better library, or any one of a number of uses that will help to keep Southwold a living and thriving town.

I very much hope that all those who have Southwold’s interests at heart will do what they can to support this idea.
